SCOUT BANANA is committed to supporting grassroots organizations and projects in Africa that provide basic needs and build the capacity of health systems in Africa. What does that mean?

Methodology

Our fundamental belief is that communities know best what is needed and what will work. SCOUT BANANA will never “develop,” we will never run a country office, or mandate project actions.

SCOUT BANANA works within a paradigm where our Campus Network has privilege and resources to support Partner Projects while at the same time our Partner Projects have resources to educate our members and offer experiences. We teach our members to act as “allies in development” in order to create a more cooperative organization where privilege is recognized and resources utilized.

Criteria for Projects

SCOUT BANANA supports existing structures because often communities have the solutions to their own problems, but the support is missing

  • Health Focused (capacity building & basic needs)
    1. Capacity Building: Tools & Training – medical supplies, ambulance, health centers, health worker trainings (nurses, doctors, para-professionals)
    2. Basic Needs: medicine, food, water, etc.
  • Community-led
  • Small-scale (500,000 people or less)
  • Based in mutual aid/ support (free services)
  • Fiscal responsibility (open reporting of where funding goes)
